I don't know whether it is just that I am getting old, or that modern music really is a semi digested gizzard full of rat droppings, but I just can't build any enthusiasm for modern mainstream music.
Don't get me wrong, there IS some good music out there. Tom Waits is still going, as is Ween and a few others. But Lady Gaga? Beyonce? Jason B… Sorry, I just threw up in my mouth a little.
I watched the pilot of a new comedy show the other week (Glory Daze), it's about a freshmen intake at an American university in 1986. And it struck me that the sound track was particularly good. This prompted me to try an experiment.
Why not turn back the clock 30 years. It's NOT 2011, its 1981, January 1981 to be precise.
So, for the next year, I am going to try to listen to only music that is appropriate for the time. I CAN dip into history before 1981, but I will try to take my music predominantly from contemporary releases.
I am also going to treat the year like it REALLY is 1981. For instance, Face Value (Phil Collins, released 9th February 81) is not available to me until l February, so I can't play it in January.
I have to work out the details of playlists etc, but I am hoping to bring my playlist to the screen.
