People write a lot of wishful things around the New Year. Thats not to say we should not have aspirations, but we have to be realistic. People are regulated by patterns of behaviour, habits. Behaviour that has positive reinforcement. Each time around the pattern it gets more reinforcement. So, it is not unexpected that these habits become very difficult to break.
I plan to get back into swimming. I did swim regularly for a few years, so it is not an entirely new pattern, that may be a factor.
So, behaviours don’t change on their own. The sustainable way to change behaviour is to change the reinforcements not the behaviours. Change those and you will naturally change behaviour. Like an oxbow lake cutting through the neck of its loop.
I want to be more active, but wishing it does not make it so. To that end, I am going to start doing more photography, that’s going to give me a new reinforcement, I will be carrying my gear with me and continually looking out for opportunities. Maybe that will be the spur I need.
Lets see how it goes, and Happy New Year everyone.
Oh, and if I get too intrusive with my camera, or I act like a jerk (hey, it’s still me!) just tell me to bugger off.
